What is PEG?
Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy or PEG is a procedure in which a tube is placed percutaneously inside your stomach aided by and endoscopic procedure. This is a very common procedure these days that is used for patients who are unable to ingest food on their own i.e. move food from the mouth to their stomach. Hence patients who have undergone surgeries of the gastrointestinal tract or respiratory tract, patients with neurological disorders like stroke, brain injury and people with chronic or end stage cancer are those who usually undergo PEG. This endoscopic procedure is also used to achieve gut decompression which occurs in patients with gastrointestinal malignancies and also people with small bowel obstruction. Different variations of this technique are available like the pull technique, Versa, push and introducer method.

The first one is cervical cryosurgery or cryotherapy in which abnormal or precancerous cells in the cervix is frozen to prevent the onset of cervical cancer. Another one is the LEEP or loop electrosurgical excision procedure which is also used to remove abnormal cell growth on the cervix. Dilation and Curettage or D&C is another operation which is usually done to treat abnormal uterine bleeding. Hysterectomy is a surgery that is frequently carried out by gynecologist where the uterus is removed in various conditions like cancer, abnormal growth etc. Pelvic laparoscopy is another procedure which is done for removal of gall bladder and also to treat hiatal hernia.

This surgical procedure is done under general anesthesia because it involves making an incision in the lower right side wall of the abdomen. An appendectomy is a very important procedure because there is no other way of treating an infected or inflamed appendix. It is often done as an emergency procedure because the symptoms of appendicitis appear very quickly and also because a ruptured appendix is a life-threatening condition because of the large amount of infectious material that it releases into the bloodstream and abdomen. The surgery is an easy one but there are some chances of complications.

The reasons for the inflammation vary from accumulation of thick mucus to the presence of hardened stool. The blockage of the appendix results in bacterial infection of the walls of the appendix. The most common symptom of appendicitis is acute abdominal pain that is very diffuse. The next stage is the inflammation of the abdominal lining called peritoneum. Other symptoms of appendicitis include nausea and vomiting. The inflamed appendix is in danger of rupturing, in which case the health of the patient is compromised. The only treatment for appendicitis is to surgically remove it via a surgery called appendectomy since it rarely responds to medication.
